Nowadays, if you don’t have a credit card, life becomes inconvenient and you lose money. While the former is well-understood, why would you lose money not using a credit card? Because the cash prices are mostly the same as the charge prices despite of a 3~5% markup by credit card companies. Interest on cash for the grace period and the rewards from credit card issuers would set you back 2~3% of your total spending. However, if you do use credit cards, there’s a chance you’ll rack up high-interest debts.  Following are a few strategies to rip the rewards and yet avoid the debts.
If you don’t have the cash at all, don’t apply for any credit card, period. Credit card debts are the worst loan with the highest interest. It’s better to be debt free.

If the cash will be available later, choose a card with 0% APR introduction period for 6 ~ 12 months.  This is like interest-free loan.  Do read the fine prints regarding terms and conditions. Put a reminder in your calendar a month before the introduction period is over.  Pay up the debt and cancel the credit card. 

If you have the cash, choose a card with highest desirable rewards. There is a large array of rewards that you can choose from: cash-back or rebate (some upto 5% of purchases), hotel or travel points, points for groceries/goods, frequent flyer miles, gas reward, earning towards a new vehicle, you name it.  Annual fee is bank’s pure profit.  Don’t choose cards with annual fee.  Not worth it.  Put every purchase on the card and make sure you pay up your monthly spending on time.

Do use your calendar to trigger events on payment and cancellation. You’ll be on your way to beat the credit card company and get a good reward by year end.

Instead of earning money from clicks, you are paid if you can persuade your visitors to subscribe a membership or mailing list. Commission Junction is a shining example. Earnings are in the range of $5~50 per lead.

6. Affiliate marketing (Pay-per-sale, PPS)

Being an affiliate is to sell other people’s products and receive a commission on every sale. Those products can be physical or digital. ClickBank is by far the best place to find digital products. Promotions for physical products are available at Amazon or eBay. You never need to handle the nitty-gritty of a sale, but you to have a good variety of skills including:

• Picking the right product that sells,
• Writing a good sale pitch which intrigues and convinces,
• Choosing the proper keywords with high conversion rate.

A fair number of good affiliate marketers make 6 figure income per year. Some claimed 7 digits. Many lose money doing affiliate marketing. You really need to prepare yourself before jumping in. Read our cautions here. There are quite a few methods to reduce cost and improve sales, such as building list with newsletters and article marketing.

7. Create your own digital product

Once you’re experienced enough and considered an expert or guru in your niche, you can create your own digital product, such as writing an ebook, software etc. You can then get affiliate to sell the product for you. You’ll keep 50~75% of the sales. If your product can be sold for 10,000 copies, it would be $100K~500K revenue.

Well making money online is still pretty easy, opportunities abound. However if you want to make a living online, you’ll have to cultivate your skills on writing, selling and marketing.

1. Online survey

Many companies conduct market research and are eager to pay for your opinions. You fill in online surveys in your spare time and earn cash in a range of $2~20 per survey.

2. Writing reviews of a website

If you have a blog or a website, you can earn money by writing reviews to promote other websites (normally with back-links).  Blogsvertise is a place to get assignments. The revenue is in the range of $2~40 per assignment. 

3. Offer advertising space (Pay-per-impression)

If your website attract a sizable traffic and has a good Alexa ranking, you can rent some space on your web page to advertisers. Text-Link-Ads is a popular agent which matches advertisers to you. You can expect to make $15~600 per ads space per month. Of course, you’ll need to have close to a million unique visitors per month to command the top dollar.

4. Pay-per-click (PPC)

In this case, you run ads on your website and get paid when your visitors click on the ads. There are many advertising programs.  The best known (and most popular & restrictive) is Google AdSense. Other alternatives are Yahoo Publisher Network (US only), Bidvertiser (drop-in replacement to AdSense), Chitika (with cool images!, best for product related content) and Kontera.  Adding PPC is comparatively easier comparing with the remaining methods.  The key techniques are about ads placement and attracting high-paying ads.

Consider the following example.

Joe got a copy of a guru’s “making money online secrets” from his friend.  The formula is simple than ever.

“You pick an affiliate product from ClickBank which brings in $30/sale; create a Google AdWords campaign paying $0.05/click; at a conversion rate of 5%, you’d spend $5 to make $150.”

When Joe starts a campaign, the clicks are over $1 each to net any traffic and the conversion rate is much much lower than 5%.  Down by a few hundred bucks already without a single sale, Joe is mighty frustrated.

This sounds familiar! It was part of my experience as I started. There are a lot science and strategies doing it right. The following are the most important:

• Picking the right product that sells,
• Writing a good sale pitch which intrigues and convinces,
• Choosing the proper keywords with high conversion rate.

It is wise to prepare yourself before jumping in. Here are three classics that you must read.

“Rich Jerk” was published in Dec 2005 and updated a few times. Everyone agrees that this is the most stylish classic about making money online.  You may not like the obnoxious tone of Rich Jerk.  But he revealed the true psychology of selling online, i.e. writing a sales letter and AdWords copy.  A lot small but effective tricks are first revealed here, such as creating legitimacy on your site, why offer a 200% refund and stills make money, website cloaking and traffic acquisition with article marketing and incoming link building.

If you cannot borrow a copy from your friend, you can still purchase the latest version from here.  It’s only $9.95 last time I checked.

The second must-read is “Affiliate ‘Project X’”, authored by Chris. Chris was no guru or filthily rich like Rich Jerk who wrote the ebook to show off.  Chris was like you and me struggling his way in online marketing. What set him apart was that he kept on looking for a working strategy.  “Affiliate ‘Project X’” detailed 6 methods which worked in the post-”Google Cash” era.  One of the methods followed the stock technical analysis approach, using charts to determine winners. Promoting digital products are very much like buying stocks. Promoting a product before its time, you’ll end up wasting a lot of dollars without see much conversion.  Promoting it too late when easy picks are gone, selling becomes harder and again ends in lower conversion rate.  Very insightful.  “Affiliate ‘Project X’” was published in Sept. 2006 and updated regularly.

It turned out that there are intricate dynamics in online marketing. “Day Job Killer” was a follow-up continued the search for workable formulae and strategies.

Apart from providing a basket of ready to use strategies, another important point is these two ebooks will get you thinking and discovering more strategies. They certainly have done that to me.
